Overview

The position of Shift Lead is to provide leadership, coaching, and decision making to all the batching and production operators on the shift. The scope of the position is outlined in the tasks below but is not limited to them, other duties will be assigned as required. The Shift Lead reports to the Production Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining safe working conditions for all employees.
  • Plan and coordinate daily tank usage for finished products.
  • Conduct inventories of staged ingredients and reconcile them with the upcoming production schedule. Notify the Supervisor of any discrepancies between staged inventory and the plan.
  • Maintain all CIP and cleaning logs in Redzone. Ensure the team tests all rinse water for pH and chemical titration.
  • Ensure the team is prepared to receive liquid tankers and that receipts are documented correctly in Redzone.
  • Ensure ATP swabs and allergen tests are conducted after CIPs in batching and production equipment.
  • Adjust batches as needed, including Brix, solids, and density.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all Production and Blending Ross functions.
  • Ensure all Redzone checks are accurate, completed, and signed off in a timely manner.
  • Verify that the team properly documents cleanings, MSS, lot numbers, quantities, and expiration dates according to customer regulations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Markem software and associated equipment.
  • Perform sanitation duties for batching and production areas as required.
  • Coordinate training for new operators and provide refresher training for current operators.
  • Direct and assign batching activities to ensure a consistent supply of finished products for production lines.
  • Follow and monitor GMP, HACCP, Food Safety, and SOP guidelines.
  • Understand and follow plant safety and quality rules, including PPE usage, safe lifting techniques, and safe machine operation.
  • Operate forklift and manual pallet jacks.
  • Learn and operate the UHT system as needed.
  • Inspect and test machinery and equipment to detect malfunctions.
  • Communicate equipment issues and assist Maintenance with breakdowns in batching and production areas.
  • Operate equipment during startup and shutdown procedures.
  • Develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with employees and management.
  • Ensure products meet quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to test and approve product quality.
  • Optimize plant efficiency and coordinate operational needs accordingly.
  • Report unsafe acts or equipment immediately and assist Supervisors in incident investigations.
  • Ensure net content requirements are met before each production run concludes.
  • Direct team members to assigned positions and upcoming tasks, including CIPs, product changes, rework, and Paycom training.
  • Create, communicate, and enter shift notes accurately.
  • Operate equipment as needed to cover call-ins, breaks, or lunches.
  • Coach and train team members to improve knowledge and performance.
  • Ensure team members receive scheduled breaks and lunches.
  • Communicate production status, prior results, and setup expectations to the incoming shift.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain equipment to ensure production and quality standards are achieved.
  • Utilize MVP1 to submit work requests as necessary
  • Chemical Handling: Knowledge of Titration or concentration testing for CIP Chemicals
  • Lockout/Tagout: Training for Safe Cleanings of Equipment
  • Collaborate with QA to pull samples and verify product integrity throughout the batching process
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to identify root causes of equipment failure (seal leaks and faulted pumps)
  • 5S experience & Kaizen to reduce waste
  • Knowledge of CIPs
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Plant Management.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in food manufacturing.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English required; Spanish is a plus.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb stairs and ladders, and lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to perform basic math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rate, ratio, and percentage calculations.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills.
  • Strong business awareness and ethical judgment.
  • Results-driven with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze data, identify deficiencies, and perform root cause analysis.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to receive, analyze, and report information efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Ross, Redzone, Markem, Pressco, Vision Systems, Wonderware, and MVP1

This position is classified as Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime). The expected hourly rate for this position is between $25.00 – $33.00 per hourbased on a full-time schedule. Location, confirmed job-related skills and experience will be considered in setting the actual hourly rate.
