Recognized by Time as one of the most influential companies of 2023, along with awards from Linkedin and Lattice, we are grateful to Equipsters for building a sustainable treatment program that has served thousands of patients and families.

About the role

The Vice President, Patient Journey Innovation will build and lead a team responsible for the overall patient engagement journey, digital experience design, and therapeutic content strategy and execution across Equip’s platform - ensuring every touchpoint motivates, supports, and retains patients in care. This is a uniquely cross-functional leadership role, sitting at the intersection of content, UX, behavioral science, and clinical outcomes. The Vice President, Patient Journey Innovation requires someone who understands what drives and undermines the motivation and decision-making of people in recovery, and how to translate that into scalable digital experiences that drive sustained engagement for a clinically sensitive population.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive a comprehensive patient engagement strategy and framework rooted in evidence-based behavior change models, including motivation theory, self-determination theory, habit formation, and relapse prevention principles. Leverage AI-driven personalization and predictive modeling to identify at-risk patients early and trigger timely, behaviorally informed interventions before drop-off occurs.

  • Lead the vision and execution of patient-facing product experiences, ensuring Equip’s platform is intuitive, accessible, and clinically aligned for individuals in recovery. Apply behavioral design principles to build experiences that support sustained engagement without creating undue cognitive load or friction.

  • Build a content program that educates, motivates, and supports patients and families throughout treatment, including in-app messaging, psychoeducational resources, and milestone communications. Ground all content in health literacy principles and behavioral communication frameworks, and use AI tooling to scale production and personalize messaging by patient segment without sacrificing clinical accuracy.

  • Behavioral science & optimization — Serve as the internal authority on behavioral science application across engagement, content, and experience design. Partner with Clinical, Data, and Product teams to design and test behaviorally informed interventions and apply machine learning models to continuously refine segmentation, targeting, and intervention timing.

  • Oversee the full patient communication journey across email, SMS, and in-app channels, from onboarding through active treatment and ultimately step down, informed by clinical, behavioral, and data signals to ensure messaging applies the right behavior lever at the right time. Use AI-powered orchestration tools to automate sequencing and adapt patient journeys dynamically based on real-time behavior and behavioral risk indicators.

  • Own the development and tracking of core engagement KPIs including activation rates, enrollment, retention curves, pathway completion, and sustained participation.

  • Collaborate closely with Clinical, Product, Data, Engineering, and Care Operations to align engagement initiatives with Equip's care model and growth strategy. Serve as the bridge between clinical evidence and digital execution, translating therapeutic frameworks into scalable product and content decisions, and championing responsible AI adoption in a clinically sensitive context.

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing team spanning content, UX design, behavioral science, and patient engagement operations, with a strong bias toward hiring AI-fluent practitioners.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience leading patient engagement, digital health UX, content strategy, behavioral science application, or a related discipline.

  • 4+ years in a senior leadership role.

  • Deep grounding in behavioral science and health behavior change models with demonstrated experience applying frameworks such as motivational interviewing, self-determination theory, COM-B, or behavioral economics to real-world engagement and product challenges.

  • Demonstrably AI-native approach with hands-on experience deploying AI tools for personalization, content generation, or predictive engagement.

  • Demonstrated success driving engagement and retention in a healthcare, behavioral health, or consumer health product with demonstrated success translating behavioral theory into measurable outcomes.

  • Deep understanding of UX principles and behavioral design including choice architecture, cognitive load reduction, and motivation-preserving experience patterns for emotionally sensitive user journeys.

  • Strong content strategy background with demonstrated success building programs grounded in health literacy and behavioral communication principles.

  • Strong data analysis skills with demonstrated ability to interpret and translate engagement metrics, design experiments, and behavioral signals into actionable strategy. Familiarity with ML-driven segmentation and predictive modeling is a strong plus.

  • Strong people management experience with a demonstrated ability to lead and grow multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience building and owning experimentation frameworks including behaviorally informed A/B testing, intervention design, and optimization cultures across cross-functional teams.

  • Experience working within or alongside clinical teams; familiarity with eating disorders or mental/behavioral health treatment models is a strong plus.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with a talent for translating complex behavioral and clinical concepts to diverse audiences and gaining organizational buy-in.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and collaborate with humility, inclusiveness, and open-mindedness to other perspectives. Demonstrated ability to solicit input on topics and balance those perspectives.
